Sam Cykert, MD, leads UNC’s efforts for “Heart Health NOW! Advancing Heart Health in NC Primary Care,” an initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in partnership with Community Care of North Carolina. Researchers use the electronic health record to calculate risk factors and engage with primary care providers to improve the heart health of their patients.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of multiple new sites to join the Mid-South Clinical Data Research Network (CDRN), a collaborative partnership that is harnessing data from electronic health records to improve outcomes for patients throughout the Southeast. The expansion is funded by a three-year, $8.5 million funding award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).

UNC-Chapel Hill is now part of the Carolinas Collaborative, an initiative funded by The Duke Endowment and led by Health Sciences South Carolina. The Carolinas Collaborative seeks to develop a Learning Health System among health systems and medical schools of UNC-Chapel Hill, Health Sciences South Carolina, Duke University, and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The work will center on developing research-enabling information technology infrastructure and tools.

UNC has received a NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Training Grant award. A multidisciplinary, predoctoral training program will be led by Michael Kosorok, PhD and M. Gregory Forest, PhD. The program will recruit students from biomedical science, computer science and informatics, and mathematics and statistics.

Dr. Arlene Chung, of UNC School of Medicine, and Dr. Ethan Basch, of UNC School of Medicine and School of Public Health, recently published a paper in JAMIA titled Incorporating the Patient’s Voice into Electronic Health Records through Patient-Reported Outcomes as the “Review of Systems.”
